I used to be afraid is the name of an album on facebook in which I started collecting stuff that I found or made since 2019. The thing that scared me was the use of colour in my work – I still hesitate to call this collection ‘art’ but I did show parts of it in an exhibition in Exit 11 in Grand-Leez. Because the domain of colour is mastered by artists I admire like George Meurant I felt like a fraud to play with this myself. But I challenged myself to get rid of the fear and to permit myself to experiment.

I enjoyed the therapeutical aspect of painting small coloured squares and combining colours. I also liked playing with materials that are not considered to be suitable for art, like Hama-pearls, ‘pixel-art’ and pompons. By adding yarns to some of the works it felt like I was claiming them again as my own style.

Due to my hesitation to make this work I decided to ask for less and less attention and space. The works got smaller and smaller, ending with the smallest ones of 1cm diameter. For every spot of colour I mixed new paint and I used a brush of about 5 hairs thick. It takes a lot of effort and patience to make these small works, and to me this aspect added value to them.

But quite soon I felt incapable of really adding value to the world of coloured artworks and then the darkness set in again – black took over, starting with the painting ‘there’s a rainbow underneath but then my mood changed’. I liked to paint over the colours with black, like a Rolling Stone, and to add words on top.
